The Building and Safety Division enforces building codes and standards adopted by the State of California and the City of Barstow for residential and commercial structures. These standards include:

City of Barstow's Municipal Code

The Permit Process is the instrument used to enforce the law, which generally includes permit processing, plan review and inspections. Building & Safety is also charged with ensuring compatibility with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act as well as conducting inspections to ensure compliance with state and local fire protection regulations.

Ensuring Compliance

The ultimate goal of Building and Safety is to ensure that constructions within the City comply with all applicable codes and thereby minimize the potential for construction hazards, unsafe constructions and harm to the environment – protecting public health, safety and welfare.
