Community Emergency Response Team

After September 11, 2001, America witnessed a wellspring of selflessness and heroism. People in every corner of the country asked, "What can I do?" and "How can I help?"

Citizen Corps was created to help all Americans answer these questions through public education and outreach, training, and volunteer service.

The City of Barstow’s Fire Department’s response was to establish a local Community Emergency Response (CERT) Program as part of the City’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and local homeland security response.

Barstow CERT Mission

The Barstow CERT program's mission is to ensure that disaster preparedness education and information is made available to the residents of Barstow through training and community outreach programs. Our purpose is to increase the knowledge and preparedness of Barstow's residents by teaching them how to deal with natural or man-made disasters up to 72 hours or until help arrives to assist them.

Training Opportunities

We accomplish our mission by offering a free 21-hour Basic CERT course to people who want to learn how to take care of themselves during a disaster. In the Basic CERT classes, students learn disaster preparedness and response skills through hands-on and classroom training. Classes include fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations and more.

Sign up today to get trained by contacting Barstow CERT at (760) 256-2254

Barstow CERT volunteer opportunities

Volunteer opportunities are available for those graduates who complete advanced training. Graduates can choose to volunteer to assist the Fire Department in a variety of specialty areas. Also, should the need arise, volunteers with the appropriate level of training may be requested to support the Fire Department during a large-scale disaster.

We encourage all of Barstow’s residents to volunteer to do extraordinary things during times of crisis. We cannot predict when a disaster will occur. However, each of us can take personal responsibility to get trained, be prepared and get involved to make Barstow the safest place in the nation to live, work, and play!

CERT members are trained in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operation.  You will learn how to prepare for emergencies, what supplies you should NOW have in your house, how much food, how much water but most importantly, how to protect your family in an emergency!  Learn how to become an asset, not a victim.
