At the City Council meeting on June 3, 2024, staff was directed to kick off the application process for the Community Benefits Grant Program. This initiative enables Boards and Nonprofit (501c3) organizations to seek funding to enhance their services to the Barstow community. The following are some examples of eligible uses.
Senior Citizens Programs
•Senior centers offering activities, health services, meal programs, transportation assistance, and recreational opportunities for seniors.
Holiday Events
•Fourth of July fireworks displays, Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, Halloween parades, and Easter Egg Hunts.
Public Safety
•Police and Fire departments, disaster preparedness initiatives, crime prevention programs, community programs/events and equipment needs.
City Beautification
•Street cleaning, graffiti removal, residential or commercial grants, tree planting, public art installations, and revitalization projects for parks and public spaces.
Capital Improvements/ Including Expansion or Improvements to Existing Facilities
•Building, improving, and expanding public parks, upgrading water treatment plants, constructing municipal buildings, and upgrading technology.
Litigation Defense
•Defending the city against lawsuits related to property disputes, civil rights violations, or contractual disagreements relating to the cannabis industry.
Local Public Service
•Waste management, water and sewer services, public transportation, street maintenance, and zoning and planning services.
Housing Programs
•Subsidized housing developments, Section 8 housing vouchers, and homeless shelters.
Community Organizations
•Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Barstow Police Activities League and other Non-Profits, School Organizations and Programs, Scholarship and Grant Programs.
Special Social Organizations
•Rotary clubs, Lions clubs, foster groups, Special Needs, local chapters of national organizations like the Red Cross, and community service groups.
Special Community Events
•Farmers markets, cultural festivals, art fairs, community picnics, and charity fundraisers.
Infrastructure
•Roads, bridges, public buildings, utilities (such as water and electricity), public transportation systems, and communication networks.
Applications will be evaluated by a committee, and all recommendations will be presented to the City Council for final approval.
To apply, you can submit completed applications via email to kcarmon@barstowca.org or mhernandez@barstowca.org. You can also drop off your completed applications at City Hall - attention City Manager's office from Monday - Thursday between 8:00am and 5:30pm. Applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted.
