The Barstow Police Department Explorer Post accepts applications for new members on an ongoing basis. The program, limited to 25 members at any one time, is designed to give youth an opportunity to learn about the field of law enforcement by actually working with police officers and by attending training programs in law-enforcement-related subjects. The program also develops individual leadership skills while stressing the importance of teamwork and community service.
To be eligible for Explorer Post membership, the applicant must be between ages 14 (and in high school) and 21, maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average, have no serious criminal record and have a good reputation in the community. Eligible applicants must successfully pass an oral interview and a background investigation before being selected for membership.
Once selected for membership, the Explorer member can start earning his/her required service hours by assisting with Barstow Police Department operations and participate in civic outreach events, e.g., conducting crowd control, traffic control, fingerprinting, McGruff public relations and more. Members are required to attend the 40-hour Explorer Academy, which is held at different times throughout the year. Once graduating from the Explorer Academy, members can join officers on police patrol ride-alongs.
Applications can be picked up at Barstow Police Department, downloaded by clicking on the link above and/or one can be mailed to you. After the application is turned in, an Explorer Advisor will contact you to inform you on the status of your application.
