The museum houses a series of displays and exhibits that portray the history of the Mojave River Valley from the arrival of Father Garces in 1776 on through pathfinders, pioneers, miners, railroads and the present space program. Their archive of local area newspapers dates back to 1911 and their photo collection contains more than 20,000 photos.
Western America Railroad Museum
Located within the historic Harvey House, the Western America Railroad Museum houses railroad memorabilia from not only the Barstow area, but from the entire West as well. Old locomotives, photos and archives are available for public viewing. There are also two cabooses open for tours.
The Desert Discovery Center at 831 Barstow Rd. has exhibits, a desert trail to explore, and is home to the Old Woman Springs Meteorite, the second largest space rock ever found in the United States. The center is a partnership between Barstow Community College, Barstow Unified School District, the Bureau of Land Management, the City of Barstow and the Mojave Valley River Museum.
The Route 66 "Mother Road" Museum was dedicated on July 4, 2000, in the historic Casa del Desierto, Harvey House, in Barstow, California. The museum displays a collection of historic photographs and artifacts related to Route 66 and the Mojave Desert communities. Displays include development of the United States Route 66 from early pioneer trails, railroads, automotive history, businesses and sites.
The Daggett Museum consists of more than 40 cases displaying early American collectibles, railroad china, information about Navajo Indian Code-talkers from WWII, barbed wire, lapidary work and much more, including a unique model of the nearby Solar I Generating Plant.
The Goldstone Outreach program is located in Barstow at the Historic Harvey House (Casa Del Desierto). The NASA Goldstone Visitor Center at the Harvey House in Barstow is located at 681 North First Avenue Barstow, CA 92311. The main Harvey House entrance faces South toward the Railroad Tracks and we are located on the second floor. The NASA Goldstone Visitor Center is open with no cost to visit and no reservations required. We are closed on Federal Holidays.
School and public groups are encouraged to schedule a time to visit us at the NASA Goldstone Visitor Center located in Barstow and learn about the amazing work being done by NASA/JPL and Deep Space Network.
