How to Obtain a Vehicle Release

30-Day Impound
Vehicles impounded pursuant to California Vehicle Code 14602.6 will be held 30 calendar days.
Post-Storage Validity Hearing
Vehicle owners may contest the validity of a vehicle impound or request consideration for early release of a vehicle being held for 30 days by contacting the Records Bureau to set a storage hearing at (760) 255-5112.
STORED VEHICLE INFORMATION
In the event that your vehicle is impounded or stored, the registered owner is responsible for paying any fees associated with the storage, including vehicle release fees from Barstow Police Department as well as storage fees associated with the towing company.
If you are the registered owner of a vehicle that was impounded or stored by the Barstow Police Department, it is your responsibility to pay the fees associated with the storage. You may come to the Barstow Police Department traffic counter to make the payment. You must be the registered owner of the vehicle, and either be licensed, or have a licensed driver with you in order to receive a vehicle release form.
HOW MUCH IS THE VEHICLE RELEASE FEE?
Listed below is the current rate (subject to change) for a vehicle release fee:
- $125.00 dollars.
HOW DO I GET MY CAR BACK?
Once the registered owner has paid the vehicle release fee, the Barstow Police Department will provide a vehicle release form. That form can then be taken to the tow yard, where the vehicle is stored; however, it is the registered owner’s responsibility to pay any storage fees accrued by the tow yard.
To obtain a release of a stored vehicle, you must present all of the following at the Barstow Police Department:
- Valid driver’s license or have a licensed driver with you.
- Proof that you are the current registered owner or legal owner, a notarized letter from the registered owner giving you permission to take possession of their vehicle, a court order giving you authority to take possession of the vehicle, or Probate/Divorce paperwork stating the vehicle has been given to you.
- Payment of the $125.00 release fee—cash, check, or money order only.
