AB 1826 Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling

food waste

About half of California’s waste stream is organic material like food waste, yard trimmings, and lumber. Organic material can be diverted from landfills into composting and anaerobic digestion facilities where it is transformed into rich soil amendments and biofuel. California is aiming to reduce the amount of organic waste by 50% by 2020 and 75% by 2025.  In order to achieve this target,  Assembly Bill 1826 requires commercial businesses to arrange for organic waste recycling services if they generate 2 cubic yards of solid waste per week.  Effective May 2021, The City of Barstow and Burrtec Waste began implementing its mandatory commercial organics recycling "MORe" program with a focus on food waste only, so we can start doing our part towards helping California divert food waste from growing landfills and process it into useful products!

The commercial sector generates nearly three quarters of the solid waste in California. Much of the commercial waste disposed in landfills is readily recyclable. Increasing the recovery of recyclable materials helps protect our environment, making Barstow a cleaner and safer place to do business. In particular, recycled materials can reduce the harmful gas emissions from multiple phases of product production; including extraction of raw materials, preprocessing and manufacturing. A cobenefit of increased recycling is avoided methane emissions at landfills from the decomposition of organic materials. Use of composted organic materials also provides environmental benefits such as carbon storage in soils and reduced use of fertilizers, pesticides, and water.

Since trash and recycling (including organics recycling) is mandatory in Barstow for businesses meeting AB 1826 thresholds, we want to provide you with necessary information to ensure compliance with state and local laws and assist your business in having a successful recycling program.
